چکیده

An experimental study was conducted on a large size stepped spillway model with a moderate slope (26.6o) for a range of discharges between 0.020 and 0.237 m/s. In some experiments, the stepped chute was equipped with uniform steps of 5 and 10 cm heights respectively. In addition several non-uniform configurations with combinations of 5 and 10 cm high steps were investigated. For each configuration, the air-water flow properties were measured for several discharges. The study yielded some challenging outcomes in terms of energy dissipation and aeration on stepped spillways with non-uniform cavity sizes. A comparative analysis with the stepped spillways with uniform step heights showed that the energy dissipation rate, the residual head, the flow resistance and the mean air concentration were close for all geometries. This might be used for the design of prototype spillways with non-uniform step heights, but the flow pattern of the non-uniform step configurations showed some instabilities. A stepped spillway design with uniform step heights is the preferable design option.

Stepped Spillway Flows and Air Entrainment

Stepped spillways have become a popular method for handling flood releases. The steps increase significantly the rate of energy dissipation taking place on the spillway face and reduce the size of the required downstream energy dissipation basin. The compatibility of stepped spillways with roller compacted concrete (RCC) and gabion construction techniques results in low additional cost for the ...

Aeration and air–water mass transfer on stepped chutes with embankment dam slopes

Stepped spillwayflows are characterised by significant free-surface aeration downstream of the inception point of air entrainment. The stepped design is advantageous for applications which require large energy dissipation and strong flow aeration. While the energy dissipation rate for embankment stepped spillways was studied previously, the optimum design for aeration and air–water mass transfe...

Effects of Step Pool Porosity upon Flow Aeration and Energy Dissipation on Pooled Stepped Spillways

The hydraulics of stepped spillways with flat steps has been studied for the last three decades, including for embankment dam slopes, but studies of alternative stepped designs are limited. In this study, a pooled stepped spillway was investigated in a relatively large-size facility, and three different pool wall porosities were tested. The flow patterns, the macroand microscopic air-water flow...

Air Entrainment and Energy Dissipation on Gabion Stepped Weirs

In the last three decades the design of stepped spillways regained some interest because of their suitability with new construction methods including gabion placement. In this study, the hydraulic performances of gabion stepped weirs were investigated experimentally in terms of the air-water flow properties and energy dissipation rate. A physical study was performed in a relatively large size f...

Flow aeration, cavity processes and energy dissipation on flat and pooled stepped spillways for embankments

The design floods of several reservoirs were recently re-evaluated and the revised spillway outflow could result in dam overtopping with catastrophic consequences for some embankment structures. Herein a physical study was performed on flat and pooled stepped spillways with a slope typical of embankments (θ = 26.6◦) and four stepped configurations were tested: a stepped spillway with flat horiz...
